It's not just about the money; it's about self-worth. JD would be happy with a $30 million annual. Remember, he previously sought a $30 million-a-year deal for an extension last year, which the Pistons declined— a huge mistake. They also missed the chance to accept his $40 million counteroffer this year. Now, JD's pursuit of the maximum salary highlights their oversight and stubbornness. At this point, it's got to be about principle. JD is taking a chance on himself, which means he's content with the 9.8 million. At least, that's my take. (I hope that they are able to work it out because each season JD continuously gets better.)

I am not going to feel bad about a kid with almost $40 million dollars in the bank for playing basketball, cause people are being mean to him and pointing out facts to him. Duren asked for this scrutiny when after only one good season in his career he demanded to be the 2nd highest paid player in NBA history.

At this point I don't care if he takes the one year qualifying offer!!! He had one year averaging 20 and 10.. and then he fell on his face in the playoffs…. And think he deserves a supermax INSANE

Players/ agents are learning in real time this is salary suppression. You have to get to a team that doesn’t have a max guy. Otherwise you’re getting less.

Can’t dribble, can’t shoot, no post moves. Can get putbacks and lobs. There are many centers better than him that didn’t make the all NBA team. He was given all NBA to reward the Pistons for winning 60 and 1 seed
We can't pay Cade a max and Duren close to a max and then Ausar over 140 million and still question who's the legitimate and consistent 2nd scorer and hope they both improve offensively. Not to mention resigning others or signing any free agents
Duren is looking at that Chet Holmgren 5-year contract for $240~$250mil w/bonuses. Somebody might pay him at least $40mil/year if he plays well this season; or he could take best offer, or find himself following in Andre Drummond's footsteps. Excellent point about Brunson & Wemby taking less to support their teams.

Facts. He is not max player. As Zariq said, 35M is fair, 40M/yr for 3 years is also fair. if he decides for QO, just let him go. He's just messing the team up

This idea we can't pay Duren is stupid. The best GM in the sport is paying all of Shai, J-Dub and Chet the max and has put on another masterclass offseason. Trajan is the problem not Duren. Just up the dollars and reduce the years and get it done. We are nowhere near 2nd apron concerns yet. Even if you don't want Duren here you need to turn him into a tradable asset as a minimum. The QO gives him a no trade clause. The whole East got better and we went backwards.
