The Real Reason The Raptors Can’t Afford DeMar DeRozan
A DeMar DeRozan reunion with the Raptors sounds great on paper, but the money and the role just don’t line up right now. Other contenders can offer him real cap space through the mid-level exception, while Toronto’s books are frozen behind the pending Kawhi Leonard trade. We break down the actual numbers and why this reunion might be tougher to pull off than it seems.

It comes down to how much he values the storyline of coming "home" and winning one
He needs to go wherever he feels would be best for him. That might mean going to a team that can offer him more money for a bigger role and that's fine.
With due respect, DeMar is not a good fit for the Raptors even if he accepts a reduced role for less money. He was the star back in the day and we loved him for not bailing on us like Bosh. But we also saw multiple playoff runs where he was not as dominant, weak on defense, limited on offense and psyched out by a ring chasing bus rider like LeBron James.
He is 8 years removed from that. Raptors need a rim protector and 3 n D guys. Not DeMar at age 37. Best of luck to him
