“We’ve reported for weeks here that the Heat plans to try to sign Thompson if the Mavericks buy him out, which is a good possibility. The Heat would prefer to acquire him via a buyout than a trade. Miami could pay Thompson $8 million of its midlevel exception to supplement whatever potential buyout he takes from Dallas. Meanwhile, Miami has kicked around the idea of adding veteran center Nick Richards — who has been working out with Heat players at Kaseya Center while dressed in Heat gear — but there had been no Heat offer and no deal as of midday Wednesday, per a source. Free agents can work out at the Heat’s facility if they sign a waiver. Miami is seeing what becomes available among centers in the weeks ahead; the waive-and-stretch deadline is August 29th.”
