The Denver Nuggets are having a very strange offseason including Nikola Jokic, Peyton Watson, DeMar DeRozan, and more!

  1. Denver's starting lineup is still solid. Diallo seems like an off-the-bench Christian Braun for cheap. DeRozan replaces the lost THJ bench production on the wing. Spencer Jones was a solid backup at the 4 last season. Bagley replaces JVal. Tyus Jones isn't the best backup PG but hopefully his playmaking can help stabilize the bench. Maybe Strawther and Lonnie Walker can make up for what Denver lost in PWat. They likely won't, but I hope we get some decent Strawther minutes.

  2. It's definitely a weird year for Denver, but I think from a top down perspective, they may actually be playing a smarter long term game.

They have an older team that lacked athleticism in a conference where the two top contenders are young up-and-comers that will be around for a few years at least. And pushing to contend didn't really work out last year. So…maybe taking a step back this year and giving yourself options might actually be a really good move this year. If, at the end of the season, they assess who in the conference is the team(s) they need to beat they can talk that over with Jokic and say, "hey, here's what we think we can do to retool the team around you and win next year. Does that sound promising enough that you're willing to resign and we go for it?" I'd guess it's likely a "yes" and they proceed to trade players like Murray and get younger talent that is balanced to be a true contending team next year. But if Jokic is out and wants to play on a new team he believes can compete better, they can probably work out a sign and trade and gut the team and be set up really well to rebuild over the next 2-3 years.

But the worst option for sure is pushing for contention when, even with Jokic, you likely can't get the players together to get a conference finals win, let alone a championship. Their offseason to me reads as, "we need to figure out what direction we need to move in before we try to resign Jokic otherwise we're gonna fumble it all big time."

  3. As a non basketball guy can someone help me understand. Denver at it's best would be the 3rd best team in the west and possibly 8th in league. Why mortgage your entire future so you can guarantee a semifinal exit in the west. The same applies to Steph. A Suicide mission makes great storytelling but someone has to live the reality.

  4. Nuggets with everyone healthy are still very much championship contenders
Now with probably the best backup center Jokic has + DeRozan coming from the bench I think its a very decent offseason
No need for defense if they can just outscore you, and they can do that

  5. Joker is a polar bear on ice skates. What he does is effective but looks awkward af. Must've been sent in to carry on Tim Duncan's very unathletic legacy

  6. This situation reminds me of the Boston Red Sox and the Mookie Betts trade. For those who aren't aware. The Red Sox effectively traded Mookie for some talent to the Dodgers because they couldn't afford him. Rafael Devers is a situation on how not to handle a star player. Some teams that won a piece of metal within the last 15 years either continue to try to win, become baseball's Evil Empire, or eventually after winning are content with not doing anything else ever again.

  7. Why the fuck do you keep putting gambling ads. Also what's with the negativity all the time. Jokic is not leaving and he will be 32 by the next offseason ,towards the end of his prime.

  8. They're going to ride Jokic out, trade him and restart under Murray's assist friendly distribution. The older you get, the less value you have as a Big-Man. I'm 52, 6'2/207, it took me 12wks to come back from my hamstring. THEN I started rehab on the court. 4months to come back from my cycling accident. 19yr old you isn't 30yr old you isn't 50yr old you, and management knows it. They're likely looking to sell while his value's still high

  9. If you think Denver is a contender or has been in years, and especially if you're picking them to win the title. You're either not paying attention or you know very little about basketball. Denver was barely a contender the year they won, and likely only one due to to the number of Superstars injured that year which was quite unprecedented.

  10. Hot take here….but a Jokic lead team is not going to win a championship. The chip they got, went through some of the weakest teams in the playoffs. Not going to take anything away from that chip, cause they did win it. But I don’t see how this team.

I understand what Jokic is. He is a version of me. Just a whole lot taller. You would never see me run up and down a court. If I put energy on defense, I am gassed for offense and vice versa. Statistically great, with absolutely no impact on winning basketball. Relies heavily on his IQ.

Jokic is 7ft. That’s why he is in the nba. He can make a decent shot. But I think it’s his passing that makes him be called a great. But bro….there are tons of guys out there who can do magic passes. Except they are like 6ft tall at best. Jokic being big, can body people and pass the ball at an NBA level.

But the problem with that is, you need other guys who can grab that pass and actually do something with it. Also the rebounding…dude! If you are 7ft (he is almost 7ft) and weigh like 300 pounds….the ball comes to your hand! Just stand there and hold up your hand!

Dudes a Robert Horry at best. And people praise him like he is the best ever. If you think I am stupid, then take Wemby off the spurs and plug in Jokic. And see how far that spurs team goes last season (psst…first round exit)

  11. I don’t understand the criticism here. Y’all are treating this like a funeral when, given the contract implications, and I am being completely truthful, I would rather have DeRozan(DD). DDs defensive rating is 123, Watsons defensive rating is 120. They are close, but I give the slight advantage to Watson. Using the most advantageous math for Watson, that is, his numbers as a starter and excluding games where he played less than 25 minutes, they are both close to 50% from the field, DD being one percentage point better, and DD averages one more point per game, and two more assists. They average the same amount of rebounds, and Watson is 8% better from 3.
The difference is one guy is getting paid starter salary, and the other guy cost the minimum. Getting DD for pennies is better, short term, than going over the second apron for a player who is at best statistically marginally better.

  12. If a team is in the second apron, they can't sign more than about two expensive players. Half the team needs to have be rookie contracts and coaches need to deal with it. Simple.
