De’Aaron Fox can remain the San Antonio Spurs’ starting point guard and still be left out of their best closing lineup.

That sounds extreme until you look at what Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, Julian Champagnie and Victor Wembanyama can offer together: size, defensive versatility, spacing, rim pressure and multiple ball-handlers.

The question isn’t simply Fox vs. Harper. San Antonio already had success with Fox, Castle, Vassell, Champagnie and Wembanyama. But Harper creates a different closing option — one that could force Mitch Johnson to choose between Fox’s late-clock creation and the bigger, more versatile structure around Harper and Castle.
