Why Doug Christie Might Be the Right Coach for These Kings

Matt & Kayla discuss why Doug Christie might be uniquely positioned to connect with this roster, the physical identity he wants to establish, and why the team still has plenty to prove.

Plus, they react to Kevin O’Connor predicting the Kings could finish with fewer than 17 wins. Can Sacramento use the criticism as fuel, or are the doubts justified?

  1. Compare the plays of Doug vs other teams. That's why we're losing every night by 15+ plus because the offense has no flow and fluidity. The defense is not discipline enough as well as they foul way too much and can't get enough stops.

  2. Lavine is playing defense so far. Raynaud was playing defense. Sharp is the embodiment of the identity we want and he will get minutes because of that.

Are we really going into analyzing a 3rd string group getting smacked by starters in the preseason? It's too early to get into this.

  3. It's perception and reality. It's not like Vivek and Doug have done anything to be happy about. Doug legitimately looks like he's learned and improved on absolutely nothing.

  4. Im seeing the same thing i saw when Doug took over the team. He’s a bad coach and this team is not good at all. They have the talent, they just might not fit together, again, just like last year.

  5. Doug is a terrible head coach, he gives you no reasons to think otherwise.
    – We went from a top offense to dead last when he took over.
    – He’s a terrible game manager and you saw that in the infamous game vs the Warriors when he called a TO and didn’t have one
    – So many games last year he had to pull the entire starting lineup early because of lack of production
    – The lack of production was because he failed to utilize his star players correctly like when he turned Sabonis from an offensive hub into a spot up shooter. Same with Lavine.
    – His structured play calling is non existent and the team spirals into playing isolation ball with no passing.
    – This last preseason game it took him so long to think maybe Acuff shouldn’t be matched onto Luka and he FINALLY put a wing on him.
It’s comical just cuz Doug is so loved amongst Sacramento, Kings media thinks it’s still up in the air whether he’s a good HC

  6. They have possibly 2-3 players who can play that physical style you’re referencing. Obviously, Sharp is the standard for physical defense on the team. Keegan has shown improved physicality. Other than Domas, maybe Ben at times depending on who he’s guarding. Motivation is a nice buzzword. Ability to play physical defense takes commitment and the mentality to give it your all on that end of the floor. Few others on this team have shown that ability/commitment and no coach with words can motivate a bad defender.

  7. They havent even put the roster out there during preseason. What has the office, players, coaches shown you that tells you theyre being disrespected? Respect is earned Matt. They wont be physical they wont be in your face they have the makeup of a expansion team just a roster of guys w a talented Rookie.
