Just TWO YEARS after drafting Knecht with the 17th overall pick in 2024, the Lakers have officially WAIVED him.
And the CRAZY part? They couldn’t even find a team willing to trade for him.
According to The Athletic, Los Angeles made multiple trade calls throughout training camp, but there was reportedly NO SIGNIFICANT TRADE MARKET for Knecht.
Remember, Knecht averaged 9.1 POINTS as a rookie and looked like one of the BIGGEST steals of his draft class.
But then the Lakers tried trading him to Charlotte for Mark Williams, only for the deal to FALL APART.
His role continued to shrink, and he averaged just 4.2 POINTS in 10 minutes per game last season.
Now, instead of developing their former first-round pick, the Lakers have given up on him after just TWO seasons.
Meanwhile, Bronny James and Jaden Hardy BOTH made the roster.

Yes, the Lakers failed him. Other than Reeves I cannot think of one player making any significant contributions that the Lakers drafted since Pelinka has been the GM. Pelinka is willing to trade everyone and anyone. He traded Knecht and he lost his confidence. JJ saying he is not a good fit for the offense is just nonsense. The guy can shoot and if you can shoot in the NBA you can play.

The guy was ranked 7th overall and fell to 17th, 5 years in college. Only had 1 good season and a few hot shooting games. He’s a horrible defender, possibly one of the worst in the league.

A big reason he’s being cut is the same reason why a lot of teams passed on him in the draft. He’s a five-year college player. he’s already 25 years old and there’s probably not much of a higher ceiling than where he’s at now. Bronny is 3.5yrs younger
At least Bronny has some ok defensive moments
They killed his confidence, they tried trading him and once they botched that trade with Charlotte, they never played him. Never gave a chance because the lakers wanted to play vets over young guys
