Zion: “What people don’t understand is, imagine if somebody talked about their child how they spoke about me. Critiquing my body, critiquing how I look. Every time they talked about me, it was about weight, how bad I looked. I don’t even think they realized what kind of impact that can have on you”

> What people don’t understand is, even the writers and stuff, if they have children of their own, imagine if somebody talked about their child how they spoke about me,” Williamson told FOX Sports last week. “Critiquing my body, critiquing how I look. Every time they talked about me, it was about weight, how bad I looked. I don’t even think they realized what kind of impact that can have on you.

Excuse me while I play the world’s fattest violin.

  2. DynamixRo

I just told my kid he looks like Zion and he gave me a high five.

  3. no-gimmicks-

People are fucking weird, man. So much negativity in the world – why add to it?

  4. mMounirM

you’re a professional athlete. your body is one of the most important aspects of your profession. obviously people are gonna talk about it

  5. yoyoyocoolcatbromate

Social media is destroying these players

  6. Wontonsoupz

It must be a heavy burden he was carrying.

  7. I’m kinda conflicted on this. On one hand he’s right and he has every reason to want to shut those people up forever. But I also don’t really fault any analysts/writers saying it looked like he was out of shape, because that’s an important thing when talking about a professional athlete.

  8. Obvious_Parsley3238

most of it is just part of being a pro athlete. your health and body is kinda a big deal. people went overboard with it, as the internet is wont to do

  9. VilyaNenyaNarya

Fat shaming a professional athlete is different than fat shaming a kid.

  10. Generic-username427

I am shocked, shocked I tell you, by the contents of this comments thread

  11. WinterCareful8525

He’s a kid. Y’all take it easy on him and move on. He’s gonna need thicker skin though, because for better or worse that’s just the tip of the iceberg

  12. Frequent-Cap4953

It was a lot of fat ugly mfs on this sub and twitter projecting their insecurities on to him

  13. Alive-Ad-4164

People have really shown thier true colours over this

  14. Obi7kenobi

Charles Barkley and Shawn Kemp where judged when they gained weight. Manute bol and Sean Bradley where judged for the opposite. Every athlete in every sport gets judged for their body conditioning. Hell Luka took more heat than Zion did last year for his body and condition….

  15. SongYoungbae

Dude was “out of shape” but still a million times more in shape than like 99% of the world.

  16. PeanutButterRice

The real question is if he would attempt to change if everyone was fake and lied about how good he looked

  17. Kitdee75

Imagine if Ben Simmons said this. The outpouring of hate would be even stronger.

  18. lets_talk_basketball

I see where he’s coming from, however, the peoples job is to critique his on court performance and game.. and when you aren’t in shape and overweight, you get spoken about because that affects your ability to perform.. I mean, when he went to cleveland Shawn Kemp caught some really bad fat jokes, SAS called Jamarcus russell jabba the hutt(sorry but that one was funny), etc..

  19. FakeMikeScantlin

You’re a professional athlete being paid millions to take care of your body with and you just don’t? Critique is coming at ya.

  20. v0idington

I’ll take the downvotes but don’t become a professional athlete (entertainer) if you aren’t comfortable getting harsh criticism about stuff like this. Yeah people took it too far but the guy was fat.

  21. NoDiver2011

We forget they’re people and if any one of us had to deal with and of this we would absolutely crumble lmao

  22. vandesto17

I just hope Zion stays healthy, an absolute pleasure to watch that man play basketball

  23. Gunnnnnnmmmkk

Wow sounds like a whiny baby. More people should be told they are fat. Maybe they would do something about it.

  24. AdPotential9974

Can’t wait for all the people mocking this to applaud shit about mental health when Kevin Love brings it up.

Performative support as always on Reddit

  25. TheBeesNees9696

You’re insanely rich and your job is to take care of your body. You can eat such insanely awesome great tasting food when you’re as rich as he is. It just isn’t that hard when you have access to all the tools he does. It’s purely a matter of wanting to.

When your job is to prepare your body to play basketball and you can’t do it, people are going to tear you to shreds, and it really is kind of pathetic on his part.

These guys need less yes men in their lives. Man they sound so out of touch with reality.

  26. Peytons4head69

people call Luka fat all the time. He doesn’t seem to care tho.

  27. SteveCantScuba

Block out the noise Zion. You looking good out there.

  28. ipawnn00bz

Bit of a counter to this. He gets paid to perform and when he’s out of shape he can’t perform. There’s all the right to criticize him for his body.

  29. TurtleSquad23

Charles “The Round Mound of Rebound” Barkley

    Bryant “Big Country” Reeves

    Glen “Big Baby” Davis

Kyle Lowrys backside by itself probably has several fan clubs

    Zion “Fat Professional Athlete” Williamson…
This one just doesn’t have the same type of ring to it.

  30. moneedelray

This sub is really gonna act like the internets including their lame ass fat jokes are the same thing as critiques from analysts LMFAOOOOOOOO

  31. RaycharlesN

It’s odd to me to hear a professional athlete be critical of someone assessing his body. The genetic literary that got him many millions of dollars.

  32. DisasterPeace7

You chose to be a public figure and you make millions of dollars playing a game, I don’t care

  33. downsly46

You are Zion Williamson. It’s not the same as fat shaming some mid-30’s balding desk jockey who is depressed all the time. You are paid to workout. That’s living the dream for most people

  34. SpinLaFlame

well then don’t be an overweight professional basketball player lol

  35. What a mature, level headed response. Love this kid, and the positivity he continues to spread despite all the hate.

  36. Appropriate-Job-2972

He gets paid a lot of money to not eat donuts. Cry me a river. I’ll gladly swap jobs with him

  37. New_Essay_4869

As an athlete, it is fair criticism. You out yourself out there as a public figure and have a certain ‘criteria’ to be judged against.

  38. It comes with the territory, people talk about athletes’ physiques, if you don’t like it, get a real job
