No one is giving him 30 a year. His value to the Mavs is much higher than anywhere else because other teams don’t have Luka to help with the two man game.
Two teams with caps space traded him, being Houston and Detroit, he will get more then 20 mil but it won’t be 30 mil maybe 24/25
Do you understand that if he gets injured he can get far worse offer than that 20 mil per year for 4 years? Look at Schroder betting on himself or Oladipo. Even if Wood doesn’t accept the offer we should still extend it, especially that it would be a steal. To show him that we value him.
It is the exactly same situation like with Brunson. We didn’t even offer him that 55/4 which was a huge bargain even before the season and he felt disrespected. His father also claimed that he would actually accept it if the offer was made.
Gambling with really good players is ridiculously idiotic behavior when contracts are the most important assets that teams have. Fuck that cap space in 2025 if it means losing Wood.
He could make more than his max extension, but he won’t make 30 per
He’s not gonna get significantly more than what Mavs can give him.
He’s not getting 30m get serious man
It’s reasonable for Wood to consider a 2 year extension because his value will likely continue to rise over the next few seasons, plus the Cap will go up. Therefore, he could get a pretty big contract in 2025, where as right now I’m not sure how big it would be.
Depends what you mean by 30 per year. 4 years at 8% raises starting at 26? Well…possible $26 is the average of comparable player salaries that I pointed out [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Mavericks/comments/10axpe0/christian_woods_value/). It will really depend on the market and if there is a bidding war. I don’t think we can go lower than 25 without attracting another suiter (22 1st year, 8% raises). However, I think it’s be smarter to try and package this as a 3 year descending contract with a team option in year 3 starting at $26. So year 3 would be right around $22 allowing the Mavs an out if they absolutely need it as either a budget contract in trade or outright cap space and Wood gets ~$50M guaranteed.
At least offer him the 4 years instead of 2 if that is enticing.
There’s no way he gets 30 mill
I predict $25m/year (and think he’s worth it, and think the Mavs should be the team to pay him).
There are two things that work against Wood that I see a lot of people fail to consider.
1st- This is his 7th team in 7 years. Most of his history in the league hasn’t been good. There are a lot of people and players that have moved throughout the NBA during that time who have an established opinion of him. It’s not going to “kill” his market, but there are going to be a lot of “back in xyx he was this way” during FO discussions.
2nd- He is playing with Luka. This is like having a great offensive line for a running back. Is he really that badass now or is this what having “that dude” does?
For the record, I think his “improvement” is mostly because he’s playing with Luka, but not in the sense that most think. He seems to be a classic 2nd option in that he needs to be in a good locker room with a clear alpha dog. As a player, he can push and motivate the “main character” like Vegita, but he can’t rally the whole team like Goku.
All that being said, it only takes one team to pay Chandler Parsons and his smoked knee $95M for him to get $95M. So, if just one team thinks Wood is that awesome (and didn’t think he was worth a late 1st, Boban, and junk last off-season) he could get $30 per…I guess… and it would probably work out about as well as it did for Memphis.
This mfer actually made a poll for a rhetorical question 💀
I will be inconsolable if we lose wood. Can’t see Cuban let a third good player sail away for absolutely nothing. It would challenge the lifetime of MFFL.
Yes but can he play with Luka Dončić if he leaves?
Do you realize this is his 7th team for a reason? Who is offering 30?
There is not a single team who is gonna give him 30 mil lol. In fact i doubt he can even find a 25m deal.
Edit: Other than centers like Jokic, Embiid, Giannis(lets say he is C), Sabonis etc. (aka very different style of basketball who can do very special things) not a single center/big man earn that kinda money. Centers value like all time low rn so yea no one would pay that money to Wood. Maybe Mj since he is terrible lol.
30 mill?? No…
Oh my goodness this sub is going to make Wood a first ballot hall of famer by this time next week.
No one is giving him 30
If Woods is smart, he stays with the Mavs even it’s for a bit less money than he can get elsewhere.
Pardon the stupid thought, but is there a chance he takes the 20/2 bc he wants to go get a title with Luka and he actually fits on this squad? Didnt he have so much trouble being accepted and fitting in in his former teams?
Then offer it.
Nobody is giving wood 30mil a year
20 is about right for Christian. Just look at the sons the bums getting 18-20. He might get offered more by other teams though.
