Player A – 15/6/8 on 42/29/67 splits with 3.6 TO per game
Player B – 14/4/4 on 49/45/89 splits with 1.6 TO per game
Player A
• is playing for a borderline play-in team
• resisted going to the bench for over a season for reasons and at one point said sitting on the bench hurt his back
• is the product of his team’s (actual) GM thinking star power can make things alright in the long run
• came to the team as a result of trading away useful assets
Player B
• is playing for the team with the NBA’s best record
• embraced his role, saying it would actually help his health not having to carry the load all the time
• highly efficient and not disruptive to the offense
• was acquired for mostly unused bench pieces
Yet somehow the Worldwide Follower in Sports has had a season long campaign to anoint Player A as the favorite for 6th man of the year. Any reasonable fan who values team success and efficiency – or basically likes good basketball – knows that Russell Westbrook shouldn’t be sniffing 6th man of the year.
Player B is Malcolm Brogdon
When they were talking about season awards on their latest podcast together Zach Lowe told Bill Simmons that Westbrook was the favorite for 6MOTY … basically because of the Worldwide Follower’s ongoing narrative… I love Zach’s work but hearing him repeat that company narrative was just bonkers…
