Paul George is saying what many people who are at the very top of their professions say. This isn't about lack of effort. A person with this mindset doesn't work less hard or try less hard because they have the maturity to lead a healthy life and move beyond past failures. This is about life experience. He is mirroring words of other top NBA players, including Lebron James, who have built their success by outworking everyone else. In the end, healthy, successful people accept failure. They don't live in the past, beating themselves up over things that didn't go right. They don't need that sort of self mental abuse to make themselves work as hard as they can. They don't have to lie to themselves about their past effort, suggesting it was less than what it was.
Paul George sounds like a functional human being. That's the distinguishing characteristic I see. He is fit to lead. He is fit to have a family. He hasn't let the irrationality of sports media prevent him from thinking rationally.
